The Baroque basilica of BirnauThe Baroque basilica of Birnau

Birnau basilica is one of the highlights of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. Surrounded by vineyards, the pilgrimage church of Birnau rises majestically above Maurach bay. From the church, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view down onto Uhldingen-Muehlhofen, and out across Lake Constance as far as the Swiss Alps.

Birnau pilgrimage church

Situated on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, Birnau basilica is one of the loveliest Baroque churches in southern Germany. This masterpiece was built by architect Peter Thumb, stucco master Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer and painter Gottfried Bernhard Göz.

A Baroque jewel on Lake Constance

The pilgrimage church enjoys an unrivalled position high above Lake Constance, its imposing façade dominating the surrounding countryside.
The interior is richly decorated in the rococo style; God’s very own ballroom.

On St. Bernhard’s altar, the figure of the Honigschlecker, the honey-eating cherub, has become the emblem of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, and is greatly admired. The church is administered by Cistercian monks.

Church services: Sundays and holidays 07.30, 09.00 (only from Easter to All Saints’ Day), 10.45; weekdays Mon – Sat 08.00, Thurs 19.00 devotion;

19.00 on the 13th of each month from May to Oct, Fatima pilgrimage with procession of lights (if the weather is fine).

Guided tours: May to mid-September, every Thurs at 15.00, free of charge. Private tours only possible if pre-arranged.
